Index of Industrial Production in Assam
(Base Year 1993-1994 = 100)

1. Introduction

Index of Industrial Production is of immense use in gauging the industrial growth of the State. Index of Industrial Production is precisely termed as one of the tools for measuring the growth of the industrial sector at a particular point of time. The industrial growth is measured in terms of the production relatives with reference to the base period and is considered as one of the prime indicators of economic development and helps study the trend / behavior of industrial performance of different groups of industry. The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Assam has initiated compiling Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in Assam in 1961 with 1960 as the base year and since then production indices have been compiled and released regularly for every year. The original series covered only six items. Later on the base year was shifted to 1970 widening the coverage to twenty five items under 13 Industry Groups of NIC 1970. In National and State level also, the base year of production indices was shifted to 1980-81 from 1970, but in Assam it could not be done due to the abnormal situation prevailed in the State during the period.

On the basis of recommendations of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), Government of India, it was decided to bring forward the base year from 1980-81 to 1993-94. This report is in the revised series with the Base Year 1993-94=100 in Assam. It covers the revised annual indices for the year 1998-99 to 2006-07 and monthly indices for the year from 2001-02 to 2006-07 as per NIC-1987.

2. Scope and Coverage

The Index of Industrial Production is restricted to Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity (generation) Sectors, which significantly contribute to the State Domestic Product in general and to Industrial Sector in particular. The Manufacturing Sector covers industries registered under Section 2(m)(i) and 2(m)(ii) of the Factory Act, 1948 and functioning within the jurisdiction of Assam.

The scope of the current series of production indices is confined to the Division 2 and 4 in Manufacturing Sector of National Industrial Classification (NIC) 1987 and 8 Industrial Groups are considered at 2–digit level NIC which covers 36 items. Under Mining & Quarrying Sector 4 Minerals are selected and Generation of Electricity is considered in Electricity Sector.
